Home roasting doesn't need to be an expensive endeavor. At Green Java Beans we have tested out different ways to roast at home. Here is our best tried and true way of roasting.
After roasting allow your beans to cool for a few minutes. You will then have to take the husks off of your beans. This can easily be done by placing a bowl and colander together and shaking your beans around inside of them. You may have to repeat this process a couple times to make sure all of the husks come off the beans. You then want to place your beans into an open container, and they will need to rest for 24hours. This is important! When your beans are roasted they will let off CO2. You will notice during the resting period that your beans will develop more of the coffee aroma. After 24 hours your beans are ready to be ground. 1/4 cup of beans will give you about 2 pots of coffee. *Note: during the roasting process your beans will get smoky (open a window if need be), they will also crack and pop. If you like a light roast you will want to remove your beans from the oven right after the first cracking. For a medium roast, you will want to remove beans from the oven right after the second crack.
Another option for home roasting, if you chose to, is to purchase a roasting machine.

*Note: Green coffee drink has a very earthy flavor, unlike roasted coffee. We have found that adding washed orange peel (or any citrus peel) at the beginning of the soaking process, or at brewing will give a great added flavor. Feel free to experiment with your own flavors.
